Safety Harness Direct: Fall Restraint & Fall Arrest Equipment
Falls from height are among the leading causes of injury and death in the workplace. If you and/or your employees work at height, it's important to use suitable fall protection equipment to keep everybody safe.
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) defines 'work at height' as any work carried out in a 'place where, if there were no precautions in place, a person could fall a distance liable to cause personal injury'. The right precautions will depend on the work situation, but may include:
- Collective protections that improve the safety of everyone present (e.g. rooftop guardrails or soft landing bags).
- Personal protections that protect one individual from falls (e.g. a safety harness and lanyard).
- Fall restraint equipment that prevents you from reaching areas where a fall might occur.
- Fall arrest equipment that stops you mid-fall and keeps you from hitting the ground.
As a general rule, collective protections are preferable to personal protections, and where possible, it's better to prevent falls entirely than to focus on minimising their consequences. But the right fall protection system will depend on your work environment, the type of work you're doing, and numerous other factors. See our Working at Height Guide for further information.
