Safety lanyards are crucial when working at height, but it’s important to choose the right safety lanyard for the job. Here are four simple steps to make this process easier.
Choosing the Right Safety Lanyard for the Job
-
Choose a Type of Safety Lanyard
There are two types of safety lanyard. Fall restraint lanyards, and fall arrest lanyards. To avoid injury, you should know which kind you need before you start shopping. Fall arrest lanyards can prevent you from falling to the ground while working at height, by catching you mid-fall. Fall restraint lanyards are designed to prevent you from reaching spots where a fall could occur. For example, if working on a roof, a fall restraint lanyard can keep you away from the edge.
Fall restraint lanyards should be used if possible, but never use a fall restraint lanyard as a fall arrest lanyard.
You’ll also need to make sure that the lanyard’s connection hardware is suitable for your harness and anchor point.
If you aren’t sure which kind of safety lanyard you need, always double check, and read product descriptions to see which kind would be most suitable for your project.

Choose a Length of Safety Lanyard
Length is one of the most important features of a safety lanyard, alongside reliability. Some of our safety lanyards are available in a few different lengths, so please check that you have selected the right option before going through with your purchase.
If shopping for a fall arrest lanyard, choose a lanyard that will let you move freely enough to work, without allowing you to fall too far. The longer your lanyard is, the further you will be able to fall. If looking for a fall restraint lanyard, think carefully about the size of the work area.
We do also have some adjustable lanyards available.

Choose Your Material
The material of your safety lanyard will need to be suitable for the work you are doing. Consider any potential hazards carefully.
We offer a variety of materials on our lanyards, such as rope and webbing, so that you can choose the right option for your project. The type of lanyard you choose can also impact the material. For example, fall arrest safety lanyards should have shock absorbing material.
Rope Lanyards are a reliable option, and have been used in both construction and rock climbing for a long time. However, webbing lanyards are often much lighter, whilst remaining sturdy. They can be great for jobs that require extended periods of wear, such as painting, warehouse work, and maintenance (if you have selected the appropriate lanyard style). Do your research to ensure you are choosing the right material for your job.
